Metabolic response during high-intensity interval exercise and resting vascular and mitochondrial function in CrossFit participants
High-intensity functional training (HIFT) can play a major role in preventing cardiometabolic disease. The majority of HIFT interventions incorporate CrossFit (CF) training. We measured aerobic capacity, metabolic response during high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), resting mitochondrial oxidative capacity, and resting vascular function in adults who participated in CF training (> one year) vs. a sedentary group completing one year (SED). Twenty-one participants were recruited (CF n = 13 vs. SED n = 8). CF participants had a 33.0% greater relative VO2 peak (p.200). CF participants had greater mitochondrial oxidative capacity (p=.014). There were no differences in large artery function, but CF participants had greater baseline arterial diameter (p=.004) and faster reperfusion following arterial occlusion (p<.05). These data support HIFT programsâ effectiveness in improving fitness, weight status, and metabolic, mitochondrial, and vascular function

and because it is characterized as a chronic inflammatory disease of
multifactorial origin, and with systemic impairment, great attention
must be paid from diagnosis to treatment in order to optimize the entire
follow-up of the patient.
The dental doctor plays an important role in the diagnosis of the
condition and must be attentive to the early signs that can appear in
the oral cavity with a frequency of up to 21%.
In this way, through this bibliographic review, which has as main goal to
correlate Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with its direct consequences
in the oral cavity, it will be possible to help dentists in the diagnosis, to
understand in detail the development of the disease and what attitude

The Isotropic Radio Background and Annihilating Dark Matter
Observations by ARCADE-2 and other telescopes sensitive to low frequency
radiation have revealed the presence of an isotropic radio background with a
hard spectral index. The intensity of this observed background is found to
exceed the flux predicted from astrophysical sources by a factor of
approximately 5-6. In this article, we consider the possibility that
annihilating dark matter particles provide the primary contribution to the
observed isotropic radio background through the emission of synchrotron
radiation from electron and positron annihilation products. For reasonable
estimates of the magnetic fields present in clusters and galaxies, we find that
dark matter could potentially account for the observed radio excess, but only
if it annihilates mostly to electrons and/or muons, and only if it possesses a
mass in the range of approximately 5-50 GeV. For such models, the annihilation
cross section required to normalize the synchrotron signal to the observed
excess is sigma v ~ (0.4-30) x 10^-26 cm^3/s, similar to the value predicted
for a simple thermal relic (sigma v ~ 3 x 10^-26 cm^3/s). We find that in any
scenario in which dark matter annihilations are responsible for the observed
excess radio emission, a significant fraction of the isotropic gamma ray
background observed by Fermi must result from dark matter as well.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Studentsâ Perceptions of an Applied Research Experience in an Undergraduate Exercise Science Course
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 926-941, 2017. Applied research experiences can provide numerous benefits to undergraduate students, however few studies have assessed the perceptions of Exercise Science (EXS) students to an applied research experience. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to describe the rationale and implementation of an applied research experience into an EXS curriculum and 2) to evaluate EXS undergraduate studentsâ perceptions of an applied research experience. An EXS measurement course was chosen for implementation of an applied research experience. The applied research experience required groups of students to design, implement, and evaluate a student-led research project. Fourteen questions were constructed, tailored to EXS undergraduate students, to assess studentsâ perceptions of the experience. Qualitative analysis was used for all applicable data, with repeated trends noted; quantitative data were collapsed to determine frequencies. There was an overall positive student perception of the experience and 85.7% of students agreed an applied research experience should be continued. 84.7% of students perceived the experience as educationally enriching, while 92.8% reported the experience was academically challenging. This experience allowed students to develop comprehensive solutions to problems that arose throughout the semester; while facilitating communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Students believed research experiences were beneficial, but could be time consuming when paired with other responsibilities. Results suggest an applied research experience has the potential to help further the development of EXS undergraduate students. Understanding student perceptions of an applied research experience may prove useful to faculty interested in engaging students in the research process
A Dark Matter Candidate from an Extra (Non-Universal) Dimension
We show that a recently constructed five-dimensional (5D) model with
gauge-Higgs unification and explicit Lorentz symmetry breaking in the bulk,
provides a natural dark matter candidate. This is the lightest Kaluza-Klein
particle odd under a certain discrete Z_2 symmetry, which has been introduced
to improve the naturalness of the model, and resembles KK-parity but is less
constraining.
The dark matter candidate is the first KK mode of a 5D gauge field and
electroweak bounds force its mass above the TeV scale. Its pair annihilation
rate is too small to guarantee the correct relic abundance; however
coannihilations with colored particles greatly enhance the effective

VLBA determination of the distance to nearby star-forming regions I. The distance to T Tauri with 0.4% accuracy
In this article, we present the results of a series of twelve 3.6-cm radio
continuum observations of T Tau Sb, one of the companions of the famous young
stellar object T Tauri. The data were collected roughly every two months
between September 2003 and July 2005 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA).
Thanks to the remarkably accurate astrometry delivered by the VLBA, the
absolute position of T Tau Sb could be measured with a precision typically
better than about 100 micro-arcseconds at each of the twelve observed epochs.
The trajectory of T Tau Sb on the plane of the sky could, therefore, be traced
very precisely, and modeled as the superposition of the trigonometric parallax
of the source and an accelerated proper motion. The best fit yields a distance
to T Tau Sb of 147.6 +/- 0.6 pc. The observed positions of T Tau Sb are in good
agreement with recent infrared measurements, but seem to favor a somewhat
longer orbital period than that recently reported by Duchene et al. (2006) for
